HRV/ERV

Your HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) or ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) plays a key role in maintaining fresh indoor air and helping reduce heating and cooling costs. These systems bring in fresh air from outside while exhausting stale, humid air from inside your home—all while conserving energy.

But without regular HRV/ERV maintenance, filters get clogged, airflow drops, and your indoor air quality takes a hit. At Aero Services, we offer professional HRV cleaning and ERV cleaning to keep your system running efficiently.

How Do We Perform An HRV/ERV Duct Cleaning?

One of our Aero technicians will inspect your HRV/ERV system to ensure that it is working properly prior to cleaning. If any abnormalities are discovered, the technician will be sure to inform you about the condition of the HRV/ERV system.

We then remove the HRV/ERV core and the filters, which are set aside for cleaning later. HRV/ERV filter cleaning is essential for maintaining system efficiency.

The vacuum hose is securely installed into the HRV/ERV to create negative pressure on the whole ducting system. The airline is set up from the furthest HRV/ERV duct, leading to the air compressor in the truck. The vacuum and air compressor are turned on.

All diffuser vents are cleaned and air-washed with 180-200 PSI of air pressure. This pushes all contamination inside the fresh air and stale air exhausts down to the vacuum attached to the HRV/ERV. Although the force of the vacuum and air pressure is tremendous, it will not harm or alter your ductwork.

After all the vents, stale air, and fresh air supply runs have been brushed and blown out, we clean the supply lines with a wide array of pneumatic and blow-back tools to agitate the HRV/ERV ductwork, and pull debris and contamination back to the vacuum to remove it from the system.

Next, we clean the inside of the HRV/ERV system including the motors, the filters, and the core, with the vacuum continuously running. This involves removing components during the cleaning process. We will then wipe clean the inside of the HRV/ERV with cleaner and disinfectant before putting the core and filters back inside.

The HRV/ERV system will be turned on and the technician will make sure that the HRV/ERV is cycling properly at the end of the cleaning process.

If you requested sanitizer, the technician will then use our fog machine to coat the inside of your air ducts, killing any bacteria or mold spores. We use Benefect solution, which is plant-based and safe for pets and children.

Why HRV & ERV Cleaning is Essential?

  • Save on Energy Costs: A clean HRV/ERV core ensures better heat and energy exchange between indoor and outdoor air.
  • Improve Indoor Air Quality: Over time, dust, debris, and moisture build up inside your HRV or ERV system, leading to poor air quality. Cleaner air filters and ductwork help reduce dust, allergens, and indoor pollutants.
  • Extend Equipment Lifespan: Proper heat recovery ventilator maintenance protects your investment and ensures consistent performance.
  • Control Humidity & Odors: Clean systems help remove excess moisture and stale air from your home.

When to Schedule HRV or ERV Cleaning?

Persistent Odors or Stale Air

Persistent odors or stale indoor air, indicating the need for HRV/ERV system cleaning or HRV/ERV duct cleaning to remove accumulated dust and contaminants from the system.

Condensation or Moisture Issues

Condensation on windows or damp spots, which may suggest an issue with airflow that could be resolved through proper HRV/ERV core cleaning and cleaning HRV/ERV filters.

Reduced Airflow from Vents

Reduced airflow from vents, which could be a sign that your HRV/ERV ductwork needs cleaning or the HRV/ERV core needs attention.

Increased Allergy or Asthma Symptoms

Increased allergy or asthma symptoms, which could be caused by dust and allergens trapped in your HRV/ERV duct system. Filter cleaning and regular system cleaning can help improve air quality.

Overdue Maintenance (2+ Years)

It’s been more than 2 years since your last service. Regular HRV/ERV duct cleaning and filter cleaning are essential for maintaining the efficiency of your HRV/ERV system and ensuring optimal performance.

FAQs

General

General

How often should I clean my HRV or ERV?

Every 2 to 3 years is recommended, depending on your environment, usage, and lifestyle.

What’s the difference between an HRV and an ERV?

An HRV transfers heat from outgoing to incoming air. An ERV does the same, but also manages humidity, making it ideal for year-round comfort.

Can I clean the HRV/ERV myself?

Cleaning the filters is a great idea, but deep cleaning of the core and ducts should be done by a professional to ensure safe and proper handling. Contact us today for a free quote!

How can I tell if my HRV/ERV is working properly?

Check if your system is maintaining good airflow, producing a steady stream of fresh air, and not emitting any strange odors. If performance dips, it’s time for a cleaning or service.

Can an HRV/ERV help with winter heating costs?

Yes, HRV/ERV systems transfer heat from outgoing air to incoming air, which helps to reduce the demand on your heating system and lower energy costs in colder months.
